What does mean contemplation?
In meditation, it’s about listening without determining the source of the sound. It’s about observing a single thing, deeply. And often, it’s nature that draws us in. Understanding how to pause for a moment, letting oneself lean against a tilted tree.
Tilted like the backrest of a seat upon which you let your full weight go.
A return to nature. Restoring nature to itself. Returning a trunk and its bark to a tree, as a missing piece. As if they had always been one.
Like growths of different origins yet so intimately connected.
A growth upon which to rest, in the morning, in the evening.
Letting your back find solace against the leaning trunk.
Contemplating, listening to the soothing sound. Allowing your feet to sway with the sensations. A shelter from the sun and rain.
We began by carving the trunk to mirror the curve of the oak tree, the very spot where our installation would reside. Next, we measured the angle for cutting the seat, ensuring the saddle’s alignment. We sculpted the front of the trunk to seamlessly integrate the rope. Our
research led us to various knots capable of bearing weight, and we chose a cotton rope dyed with coffee and chestnut tree bark for its natural hue. We embraced both the tree and the trunk with the rope, uniting them while preserving the tree’s essence. Lastly, we added a few steps to perch above it all.
